Newpointe Art Walk 2008

Newpointe Shopping Center held its First Annual Art Walk on Saturday, March 1 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Along with the Hattiesburg Arts Council, the businesses of Newpointe featured an array of artistic personalities; oil and acrylic paintings, watercolor, pencil drawings, pottery, photography, sculpturing, jewelry design, fabrics, wood and more!  There were store specials, door prizes, refreshments and entertainment.  “Newpointe is the perfect place to bring the Art Walk to West Hattiesburg.  Newpointe houses Lamar County’s Premier Art Source, Westside Studio,” added Kelly Thornton Lowery, Public Relations, Marketing and Design Manager for Newpointe. "There are talks now to have another one in the Fall!"

De Madera hosted two local artists during the Art Walk:  Bobby Walters and Lynette Ladner.  Both are members of the South Mississippi Art Association and Walters is the current President.

Walters, a lifelong resident of Mississippi, began studying art at age 15 and earned a degree in Commercial Art from the University of Southern Mississippi.  His primary medium is watercolor.  You will see many sunsets, boats and waterfront scenes in his work which come from early training with Chuck Ambrose. He also paints cowboys, rodeos and landscapes, but prefers to do portraits in pencil. He painted a New England lighthouse during the art walk.

Lynette Ladner is a faux artist who also specializes in abstracts.  Ladner, a resident of Columbia, earned certification in faux finishing from the Southern Institute of Faux Finish in Brandon, Mississippi.  She specializes in creating faux finishes in Venetian plaster.   Some of her work is currently displayed in De Madera. She was available during the art walk to answer questions about her work and also showed a portfolio of her work.

The weather was absolutely beautiful.  While there was some shopping going on, most people enjoyed coming out and touring the stores to see what they had to offer and meeting the store owners and staff.  It was also a great time to socialize and see old friends. All in all, it was a very successful event!
